Tragedy Strikes Again: Illegal Immigrant Avoids Deportation And Kills College Student In Virginia

In a tragic incident that has sparked a nationwide debate on immigration policies, a young college student lost her life in a fatal car crash in Virginia.

`3The alleged perpetrator, an illegal immigrant who had been ordered to be deported years ago, is now facing manslaughter charges.

According to the Daily Caller, the accused, 18-year-old Honduran national Elvis Jamir Cruz-Ferrera, was arrested in February for causing the accident that claimed the life of 19-year-old Lauryn Ni’Kole Leonard, a student at Old Dominion University. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed that Cruz-Ferrera had entered the country illegally in 2016 and had been ordered to leave after failing to appear at a subsequent immigration court hearing.

Cruz-Ferrera was apprehended by Border Patrol agents in McAllen, Texas, in October 2016 when he crossed into the U.S. illegally as an unaccompanied minor. He was only 11 years old at the time. Despite being released from ICE custody and ordered to appear before an immigration judge in September 2018, Cruz-Ferrera, then 13, failed to attend the hearing, resulting in an order for his removal from the country.

Cruz-Ferrera subsequently settled in southeastern Virginia, where he had several encounters with local law enforcement. The Virginian-Pilot reported that he was charged with reckless driving and driving without a license in November 2023, and again with driving without a license on January 14. However, none of these charges reportedly prompted an investigation into his immigration status.

The fatal accident occurred on February 19, when Cruz-Ferrera's Pontiac Vibe collided with Leonard’s Toyota Solara on I-664, causing both vehicles to veer off the highway and hit the guardrail. Leonard was killed instantly. Cruz-Ferrera was charged with felony reckless driving, lack of proof of insurance, driving without a license, no valid inspection on a car, and later, involuntary manslaughter.

The victim's mother, Dana Hargrove, expressed her disbelief and anguish over the incident. "I think it’s crazy," she said. "Like, how come nobody looked into it? … She’s minding her own business and you come out of nowhere and just turned my life upside down.”

Leonard, a sophomore at Old Dominion University, had reportedly secured a job conducting orientations for new students just hours before the fatal crash. Her brother, Erick Hargrove, also questioned the handling of Cruz-Ferrera's immigration history by law enforcement. "But I would just say that it’s a possibility that this wouldn’t have happened if the deportation happened when it was supposed to,” he stated.

This tragic incident is not an isolated one. Several other high-profile cases involving illegal immigrants have come to light in recent months, including the alleged murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley by a Venezuelan national, the arrest of a Salvadoran national for the murder of Maryland mother Rachel Morin, and the arrest of two Venezuelan nationals for the rape and murder of 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray.
