{UAH} 4 killed in fiery electric vehicle crash in downtown Toronto

I wondered how an EV would catch fire when it doesn't use or have fuel of any kind.

As usual I contacted my beloved good'ol uncle, Google, for a quick answer.
 
He said "EV fires occur when a lithium-ion battery cell is abused & short circuits. A lithium-ion battery cell short circuits and causes a chain reaction called thermal runaway. "Thermal runaway" is the scary-sounding euphemism for what happens in an EV fire: one battery cell short-circuits, and the resulting fire spreads uncontrollably to others".
