{UAH} How Nigeria got its name
Had to do with Frederick Lugard. Same terror commander, Lugard, we were taught in history classes as though he belonged to Uganda alone and Uganda his - well, sort of became his personal property after stripping local kings naked.
Name Nigeria is often attributed to the Niger river but at the same time Niger in Latin meant Black. Niger for Black is spelt in different ways these days and often used as a derogatory word to insult and belittle Black people. Nigger, Niga, Niggar, Nigar etc are all used in writing to belittle Black people.
The person who coined Nigeria, the country's name, must have had both definitions in the mind such as to attribute Black (Niger) river to Black people
It was British journalist and writer Flora Shaw (1852-1929) who coined the name "Nigeria" in 1897 while writing for The Times. The name comes from the Niger River, which runs through the country and is central to its landscape. The word "niger" is Latin for "black".
The British government officially imposed the name on the area in 1914, when they combined the Northern and Southern Nigerian protectorates
But Flora Shaw clearly showed in her article that the River Niger was the inspiration for her choice of the name Nigeria (Niger-area)
Lady Lugard Shaw was Lord Lugard's wife. She was close to the three men who most epitomised the British Empire in Africa: Cecil Rhodes, George Taubman Goldie and Sir Frederick Lugard. On 10 June 1902, she married Lugard. She accompanied him when he served as Governor of Hong Kong (1907–1912) and Governor-General of Nigeria (1914–1919)
Meanwhile, the name of the Nile River comes from the Greek word Neilos (Latin: Nilus), which likely comes from the Semitic root naḥal, meaning "river valley" or "valley". The etymology of the name Nile is disputed.
The origin of river name Nile relates to the Arabic and ancient Hebrew word for dark blue or indigo; in ancient Egyptian, its literal meaning is river.
Now y'all know that Lord Lugaard wasn't Uganda's alone although of all colonial Uganda explorers and administrators he is much talked about than any other followed by Hannington Speke who discovered the Source of the Nile while the ba'Soga were a'snoozing. He also served as Governor of Hong Kong from 1907 to 1912
He arrived armed and unannounced, and presented Mwanga with a treaty to sign on a site he chose for a fort. Mwanga was squeezed in the balls when signed the agreement, accepting the authority of the Imperial British East Africa Company
Lady Shaw kicked the bucket in January 1929; Lugard survived her by whooping sixteen years before going down under on 11 April 1945, childless. All these after harassing Ugandans, Nigerians and - I think - Hongkongese for decades and leaving nada, nothing, zero of the little people as proof he once existed and indeed stepped in today's Mutebistan.
And we still have a road named after this terrorist comandante which when I become el presidente and with the power I grab will name it Al Haji Idi Amin Dada Oumee, VC, DSO, MC, CBE Street to become longest street name in the world beating out Jean Baptiste Point du Sable Lake Shore Drive in Chicago.
