President-elect Donald Trump was honored Tuesday with a street renamed after him in Miami-Dade County, Florida, a Democratic stronghold that he flipped by double digits in the 2024 election.

Palm Avenue, one of the central thoroughfares in the city of Hialeah, which is nearly three-quarters Cuban and Cuban American, will now be President Donald J. Trump Avenue.

Hialeah has one of the largest Hispanic populations per capita in the US, and the move comes after Trump won Florida by a landslide and Miami-Dade by 11 percentage points against Vice President Kamala Harris, convincing a large margin of Hispanic voters to go Republican.

The Board of County Commissioners held a vote Tuesday to ratify the street name. Democrats joined in and helped approve the change 9-1, with only one dissenting member of the commission saying they couldn’t assent given some of the former president’s “derogatory comments” on immigrants.

“I respect the fact that President Trump won the popular vote, the Electoral College and Miami-Dade County,” Democratic commission member Marleine Bastien said in a statement, per the Miami Herald.

“However, his victory does not erase the collective trauma that immigrants and citizens alike felt during this election cycle.”

The outlet said Bastien, a Haitian American, specifically pointed to “falsehoods about Haitians eating cats and dogs in Ohio” and “derogatory comments about Haiti, Mexico, and some African countries in the past.”

Trump lost Miami-Dade in both the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections to Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden, respectively.

“I want to thank the commissioners that supported this item, as well as the City Council of Hialeah who had endorsed this effort from the moment President Trump visited Hialeah,” Hialeah Mayor Esteban Bovo said in a statement.
