Akena Fires Back: Uganda Stunned as MP Komakech Links Besigye's Hunger Strike to Mental Health

Kampala, Uganda – A political storm has erupted after Aruu County MP Christopher Komakech controversially linked Dr. Kizza Besigye's hunger strike to mental health struggles, suggesting psychiatric intervention. The remarks have triggered sharp reactions, with some interpreting them as genuine concern, while others see them as a veiled attempt to undermine Besigye's protest against government oppression.

Besigye, a four-time presidential candidate and a staunch government critic, began his hunger strike in protest against what he calls the continued interference of security agencies in Uganda's political affairs. His decision has drawn both sympathy and skepticism across the political spectrum.

While Komakech's comments stirred debate, former First Son and Uganda People's Congress (UPC) leader Jimmy Akena came out strongly in support of Besigye. Akena defended hunger strikes as a legitimate form of resistance and urged Ugandans to reflect on the increasing politicization of security forces.

"The option that Dr. Kizza Besigye has taken is a real and legitimate one for anyone facing unjust incarceration," Akena stated. "Today it's Besigye; tomorrow, it could be me or anyone else in the same situation."

Meanwhile, Justice Minister Norbert Mao has fast-tracked Besigye's bail hearing, further intensifying scrutiny on Uganda's judiciary and its handling of political cases. The developments underscore the deepening tensions between opposition leaders and state authorities, as Besigye's protest takes center stage in Uganda's turbulent political landscape.

With Besigye's hunger strike sparking national debate, Uganda is left questioning: Is this a fight for justice, or has the opposition's struggle been reduced to a battle for survival?
