Gas prices in Michigan this week are nearly at record highs for 2025, AAA - The Auto Club Group announced Monday.

The average for regular unleaded gasoline is at $3.23 this week, which is a 13-cent jump from a week earlier, according to the release. It's 21 cents more than this time last month but still 32 cents below a year ago. Last week, the price reached $3.28, AAA reported.

Drivers are now paying an average of $48 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration, total domestic gasoline supply fell from 239.1 million barrels to 237.6 million. Gasoline production rose, averaging 9.3 million barrels per day.

The EIA reports crude oil inventories grew by 6.2 million barrels from the previous week while U.S. crude oil inventories are at 439.8 million barrels, or about 4% below the five-year average for early April.

"Drivers across Michigan are seeing the highest gas prices so far in 2025," said Adrienne Woodland, AAA's spokesperson, in a press release. "Pump prices will likely face upward pressure if gasoline stocks continue to decrease as oil prices increase."

The most expensivegas price averages are in Benton Harbor ($3.28), Ann Arbor ($3.28) and Jackson ($3.25). The least expensivegas price averages are in Traverse City ($3.04), Marquette ($3.20) and Saginaw ($3.21).

Average gasoline prices in Detroit have jumped 8 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.18 Monday, according to GasBuddy's survey of 1,734 stations. Prices are 15 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 36 cents per gallon below the same time in 2024.

The national average price of diesel has increased 4 cents in the last week and stands at $3.60 per gallon, officials said.

GasBuddy price reports show the cheapest station in Detroit was priced at $2.84 Sunday while the most expensive was $3.69. The lowest price in the state Sunday was $2.69 while the highest was $3.91.

The national average price of gasoline has increased 11 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.21 Monday. The national average is up 13 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 35.6 cents per gallon lower than a year ago, according to GasBuddy data compiled from more than 11 million weekly price reports covering some 150,000 gas stations across the country.

"While the national average price of gasoline saw its largest weekly gain of the year, it likely won’t last long, as oil prices have plummeted amid growing concerns about the global economy following the U.S. announcement of some of the most significant tariffs in over a century, along with OPEC+ restoring oil production faster than anticipated," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, in a statement.

"In addition to falling oil prices, the stock market has dropped sharply, and the risk of a recession has increased — raising the likelihood of reduced global energy and oil demand, which is sending prices lower. As a result, motorists can expect gas prices to begin falling nearly coast-to-coast, with oil now at its lowest level since the early days of the pandemic in 2021. If tariffs aren’t scaled back soon, the national average could fall below $3 per gallon in the weeks ahead, with no clear indication of how long it might stay there as market volatility persists."
