He is now a minister in charge of higher education and is one of the best head teachers the country has ever had. This is Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, whose education career was coming to a halt since his father, who was a primary school teacher, could hardly foot his school fees.

But, as luck would have it, Madhvani Foundation paid his tuition fees, which has made him who he is today.

Like Dr. Muyingo, the head of marketing international medical link, Miriam Dhikusooka's, education career was coming to an end, had it not been for the Madhvani Foundation.

Her father passed away, leaving 16 children and all of them depended on his pension, which was sh150,000.

"I performed well in Senior Six and was called to pursue law at university, but it was expensive. I opted to study commerce, but it was also expensive. I almost gave up on my studies," Dhikusooka says.

"One day, I read about the Madhvani Foundation in newspapers and applied for a scholarship, which I won and managed to complete my studies," she adds.

Jonathan Muwaganya, a Resident State Attorney, is also one of the prosperous people, who benefited from Madhvani Foundation's funding.

These are just some of the 1,300 students who have been sponsored by the Madhvani Foundation, which paid their tuition fees. The fund has grown to over sh3b in the last 10 years. These were some of the resounding testimonies given at the recent celebration of the foundation's 10 years of service.

Dr. Jack Luyomba, the director and board member of Madhvani Foundation, during this year's launch, said the Madhvani family was inspired by a belief that an educated population is, "an empowered and liberated population."

"The fund aims at empowering Ugandans through education and we will continue to help those who are bright, but cannot afford tuition fees to achieve their dreams," he noted.

Fund

Madhvani Foundation is a charitable Trust that was established in 1962 on the Eve of Uganda's Independence. It is a large private scholarship fund with long, prestigious and turbulent history with initial affiliation to the Government.

Terms

The scholarship is extended as a grant payable directly to the university on behalf of the beneficiaries. The renewal of funding is subject to the foundation receiving satisfactory progress reports from the beneficiary's faculty.

Retakes in one or more subjects could result in the withdraw of scholarship.

It is expected that the awardees will, for the benefit of future scholars, make voluntary contributions to the Foundation.

The scholarship covers tuition fees only from the second year to completion for undergraduates and for the entire programme of study for graduate students from the time of application.

All applicants are required to provide proof of completion of first year or proof of admission to a degree or postgraduate programme, age, character and financial status of the applicant.

Applicants with work experience in relevant field of study have an advantage and any form of canvassing leads to disqualification.
This year, the Muljibhai Madhvani Foundation will contribute sh650m towards its university scholarship programme for the academic year 2013/2014.

How to apply

The Trust invites those that meet the requirements to apply. The applications can be downloaded for free from the foundation website at www.madhvani <http://www.madhvani>foundation.com or can be obtained from Muljibhai Madhvani Foundation head office on Plot Number 96-98, Business Park, 5th Street, Industrial Area.

The closing date for submission of completed forms is May 31, 2013.
