Ten children with heart problems have undergone free open heart surgeries at Uganda heart institute Mulago.
The surgeries were carried out by a team of Ugandan doctors and a ten-member team from Chain of Hope UK with support from Gift of Life International (GOLI).
The deputy director of the Institute Dr. Peter Lwabi said the camp which started on Monday ends today (Friday).
"This camp was mainly for children with heart defects, but we had a 24-year-old woman who also had a problem of heart defect since birth who benefited," Lwabi said.
The cost of open heart surgery abroad is 10,000 dollars compared to 5,000 dollars if the operation is done here.
"When we have these camps, we focus on more difficult cases and when the team leaves we take them up," Lwabi said.
GOLI executive director, Rob Raylman, appealed to the government to support the Institute such that heart cases are treated here instead of patients travelling abroad.
