[UAH] NRM Defectors Join 4GC

NRM supporters in Masaka, who announced their decision to leave the party early this week, have signed a memorandum of understanding with For God and My Country -4GC activists to join protests against the president Yoweri Museveni led government. The 300 NRM members publicly denounced the party on Monday citing by marginalization by the party leadership, poor leadership and lack of concern by the party secretariat about their plight. As a result, the NRM leadership in Masaka invited the disgruntled members to try and convince them to change their mind.

However, instead of meeting the NRM officials the group decided to meet FDC and DP activists, with whom they have signed a memorandum of understanding to join 4GC protests. Joseph Ssenzoga, the Masaka District FDC Secretary has confirmed the development. He says that as FDC they are excited that NRM members have started seeing light, which reinforces their campaign against the leadership of Museveni. Ssenzoga attributes the defection of NRM members to arrogance by the top party leadership and poor service delivery across the country.

Mathias Mpuuga, the national coordinator 4GC has welcomed the NRM defectors saying they ready to work with them. He says they plan to hold orientation meetings with the group to ensure that they dislodge Museveni with a stronger force. According to Mpuuga, the ruling party sinks daily and urges other members to leave before it capsizes with them. Mpuuga says they are happy that Tony Ssempijja and his groups were bold enough to denounce and abandon NRM, which has fed them on lies for the last 30 years.  He insists that Ugandans deserve better services, adding that the decision by Museveni to distribute money in sacks unacceptable.

Tony Ssempijja, the leaders of disgruntled NRM youths says they are ready to stage protests to demand for good governance and improved services. Ssempijja says they are currently meeting opposition activists in Masaka to agree on when to start country wide protests to demand for better services. Top NRM officials in Masaka have declined to comment on the matter. Ofwono Opondo, the director Uganda Media Center also declined to comment on the defection of NRM members saying it is out of his jurisdiction. He instead referred our reporter to Mary Karoro Okurut, who didn't pick her phone.

Rose Namayanja, the Information and National Guidance Minister also declined to comment on the matter. Noah Sserunjoji, the Southern Region Police Spokesperson says that disgruntled NRM members have wasted their time to join 4GC saying it was outlawed. He says police will not allow the planned protests to take place, and advises the disgruntled party members to find other ways of resolving their misunderstanding instead of resorting to protests.
