Bwanika struggles to get past security

Gun shots rocked Namulanda village in Lutembe along Entebbe road as police went into running battles with the Wakiso district chairman, Matia Bwanika's supporters at his home.

Bwanika was allegedly planning to hold a meeting against the alleged degradation of Lake Victoria by Rosebud flower farm in the area.

His supporters turned rowdy when Bwanika's car was blocked from accessing the main road from his home. As a result, police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd which had started pelting them with stones.

Bwanika who was accompanied by the area MP Joseph Balikuddembe were forced to drive back to the house where he was placed under house arrest.

Anti-riot police was also heavily deployed at the market and other areas near the farm.

According to the police boss of Entebbe, Edgar Nyabongo said Bwanika had organized goons to burn the farm.

"He will stay under preventive arrest until the situation turns normal. We received information that goons were being ferried from Kawuku, Kajjansi, Bwaise and Kawempe to burn the farm. They wanted to use the market as there meeting point but we cannot just look on," he added.

Nyabongo said he had received a letter about the meeting but advised Bwanika to use Kakindo playground which he rejected. "We cannot allow them to hold a meeting in a market. It will be disorganizing the traders," he added.

Bwanika denied the allegations saying the meeting was focused on solving the matter amicably. "We have even petitioned Parliament over the matter. What is done on ground by the flower farm is different from what NEMA approved. They have even fenced off the lake from public access," he said.

He said his protest against the degradation of the lake is not politicking but about protection of the environment.
