Ghana Legend Quarshie Passes On

Ex-Ghana captain Emmanuel Quarshie has passed on after a protracted battle with throat cancer.

He died on Monday, September 16 in Takoradi, a city located in the western part of Ghana. He was 59.

Quarshie was captain of the Ghana squad that won the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations in Libya. That squad had the likes of Owusu Ansah, Albert Asase, Haruna Yusif, George Alhassan, Kofi Badu, Samson Lamptey, Kofi Abbrey, Samuel Opoku Nti and Abedi Pele Ayew.

He also had a distinguished club career winning the 1982 edition of the defunct West Africa Football Union (WAFU) Cup with Sekondi Hasaacas. Later, he joined Zamalek, playing an influential role as the 'White Knights' won the Africa Club for Champions Cup (now CAF Champions League) in 1984. The midfielder also had stints in Saudi Arabia.

As a coach, he enjoyed relative successes with Berekum Arsenals, Hasaacas, B.A United as well as serving as Assistant coach of the Ghana U-17 team, Black Starlets four years ago.
