{UAH} LUKWAGO ACCUSES COUNCILLORS OF TAKING BRIBES

23rd, September 2014 By Kabale Ivan Elvis

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago now claims that State House has held meetings with city councillors to plot to impeach him in return for a financial reward. A group of 19 councillors recently petitioned the minister for the Presidency and Kampala Affairs, seeking to remove the Lord Mayor. The Minister later set up a tribunal to investigate the Lord Mayor's conduct. The three-member probe team has completed its work and the report is awaited. But the councillors have dismissed Lukwago's claims, saying they are baseless.

Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago claims that a group of city councilors met top State House officials on Saturday evening and they agreed that each councilor gets 25 million shillings to have him impeached.

But the councilors have dismissed Lukwago's claims, saying those are the baseless accusations made by a man who has failed to work as is expected of him.

Like he has claimed before, Lukwago accuses Executive Director Kampala Capital City Authority Jennifer Musisi and President Yoweri Museveni of overthrowing the constitution to frustrate his work. The Lord Mayor also accuses them of seeking to influence the report of the tribunal that has investigated him.

He was also concerned that the new report of the parliamentary committee that investigated KCCA following his petition is yet to be released. Lukwago says he has written to Speaker of Parliament to raise his concerns since justice delayed is justice denied.

The Lord Mayor vowed to engage his opponents using legal means and appealed to the principal judge to intervene.

Since the KCCA tribunal concluded its work about a month ago, Lukwago has been silent. Minister for the Presidency and Kampala Affairs Frank Tumwebaze set up the tribunal after 19 councilors petitioned him to have the Lord Mayor impeached for incompetence, abuse of office and misconduct. The tribunal is expected to release its report before the end of this month.
