Kenyan students grilled over forged transcripts

UGANDA Police has interrogated two Kenyans over alleged academic documents forgeries at Kampala University.

The interrogation follows the arrest of Hamza Ssegawa, the Academic registrar of KU, for failure to cooperate and avail the police with copies of academic transcripts of Mombasa town governor, Hassan Ali Joho.

Detectives from the Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Directorate (CIID)   questioned Kenyans both former students at the University, whose names appeared together with that of Joho in the KU graduation book of February 2013. 

Also Janet Ndago Ekumbo Mbete, who lost against Joho in the Mombasa elections and other Kenyan officials were questioned for close to two hours by the detectives at the CIID headquarters in Kibuli, Kampala district.

Joho was awarded a diploma and degree in Business Management and Human Resource Management yet he never studied," police sources said.

Mbeta had earlier petitioned the Nairobi High Court challenging that Joho was never a student at KU. She was tasked by the Nairobi high court to produce evidence against her call.

According to documents seen by The New Vision, the Youth leadership for Democratic Governance and Guidance, a Non-Government Organisation-in Kenya wrote to the Executive Director(ED), prof.  Moses Golola Uganda National Council of Higher Education seeking authenticity of Joho's academic transcripts from KU.

"We have been petitioned by several voters from Mombasa County to help them get clarification on the authenticity and genuinity of academic papers of Joho," a letter dated March 29, reads in part.

The former chairman Kenyan students to Uganda, Silas Make Otuke, told The New Vision, that the Ugandan National Council of Higher Education never responded to the requests in time, prompting them to write to CIID.

"Kenyan students are in fear of their academic credibility to be quashed by the Kenyan people, that's why we sought clearance and confirmation from Ugandan authorities," Otuke said.

Joho, 37, a member of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) of Kenya was first elected Member of Parliament during the 2007 parliamentary elections representing Kisauni constituency but in March this year he contested again and won the post of governor of Mombasa.
