{UAH} Dr. Kayondo, Kigongo; Uganda Education System - What is Wrong with It?

Forumist

I wish this forum for the sake of African people, discuss Uganda Education system. My experience for the past six years, in a University establishment
 is totally negative.

I fear if the situation continues as it is today - we are doomed.

Many people who passed through renown Universities have told me very intriguing stories, I think there is need to put together these facts into a book form.

Uganda University professors do not write books since they are not funded to conduct research. Just make a search on Google of University professors in Uganda and how many books they have written.

There are no libraries in this country- all the so called public libraries are gone with colonialism..

Lecturers have no adequate time for students,  they have to make ends meet. Most of them teach in more than three institutions.

Last year, I left my personal doctor and went for public one. He gave me drugs and a medical forms. After one week  I went back and met the same doctor.
After scritunising the medical form he personally wrote he gave me exactly the same drugs. I reminded him that the drugs he has given me were exactly the same as before. He could not believe it fortunately I managed to get the packets which I took to him and he therefore  made a change then. He appeared to be in his mid 30's.

Coming from medical family I was surprised!

There are no adequate research facilities in our Universities
Universities have no unified academic system apart from what administration/Board of Trustees think is right for them
Universities in Uganda are lawless and incubators of an almost free thinkers but with ability to think irrationally -  Kyambogo
Uganda has no system of honoring academicians and who becomes
a professor and under what conditions - I understand Makerere has done
something as a lame leader.
There is no for a centralised application system e.g. the British UCAS
There is too much corruption by both students and semi educated lecturers
May be there is also a need to centralise teaching staff recruitment to make it possible for standards monitoring
Virtually all Universities  do not have laboratories, studios, field stations, or theaters but they study Media, Chemistry, physics, architecture, biology etc. .

There should be an independent evaluation and monitoring body to evaluate value for money education offered to students at all Universities besides NCHE.
