Kampala MP Nsereko Mutumba Rumored to have Crossed over to the Opposition but Simply Keeping the Move under Wraps to Keep his ‘Marriage’ with Loaded NRM

By Stephen K Muwambi

Pictures of Kampala MP Hajj Mohammed Nsereko Mutumba seated with Dr Kiiza Besigye at a meeting called by the defacto opposition leader to forcefully keep nearly impeached Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago at City Hall, has left tongues wagging at Kyaddondo Plot 10.

In the pictures, a gloomy faced Nsereko appears in deep thought and actually listening attentively to whatever new tricks his NRM party chairman Sevo’s nemesis Dr Besigye has in store to fight Lukwago’s impeachment.

What raises NRM honchos’ eyebrows the more is that the meeting took place at the unofficially declared Kampala Central FDC offices located at Chappa Karuhanga’s Katonga Road based building. At the same meeting was Kawempe Mayor Munyagwa Mugaatigwabaata who has openly declared ‘total war’ over Lukwago’s impeachment.

Munyagwa has talked openly of being the overall ‘commander’ of ‘Force Erias Back’ and ‘Super Power’ squads that the comical Kawempe Mayor has declared are out to ensure that Lukwago stays at the City Hall helm by all means available.

Also at the meeting that Besigye called as soon Justice Catherine Bamugemereire declared Lukwago impeachable, handing him to the councilors to finish off the job, were Kyaddondo East MP Ibrahim Nganda, Betty Nambooze Bakireke, among a host of MPs other who are Museveni’s sworn enemies.

Arson

In fact, Nambooze and Nganda are alleged to have told a rally at Nakulabye Market a fortnight ago that they will burn the city if Bamugemereire turned a negative ruling against Lukwago.

Nambooze is said to have sent out a warning to tycoon Ibrahim Kibirige Muwanga aka BMK not to be tempted by ‘Kaguta’s money’ to host Dr Badru Kiggundu at his Hotel Africana Hotel when the poll umpire calls elections for the missing professional KCCA councilors that will make the quorum necessary to impeach Lukwago.

The acidic tongued lady politician also put Kampalans on notice about the impending ‘fire’. Kampala Metropolitan Police boss Felix Kaweesi has since acknowledged plans by the opposition to cause havoc, but warned that the ‘war zone’ will sort out the men from the boys.

Total support

Our pries at the heated meeting told us Nsereko indeed supported all the proposed moves to fight Lukwago’s impeachment and cursed Sevo for failing a young man who was massively voted into office.

With that background in mind, it becomes tricky for Nsereko to sit with people who have openly talked of causing trouble over Lukwago ouster.

The issue becomes more serious remembering that the NRM party leader Museveni was the invisible hand behind Lukwago. Kaguta let the cat out of the bag when he asked Lukwago to apologize to him so he could cease the beef between the two.

It should also be remembered that NRM is still battling Nsereko in the Constitutional Court with the ruling party insisting that he should find another political home. Nsereko is accused of taking positions contrary to the NRM’s. With him now sitting in meetings with Besigye, the man who have stood against Kaguta thrice, giving him a run for his sweet chair, Nsereko appears to have crossed the Rubicon( in the departed Abu Mayanja’s speak).

Understandable

Nsereko’s position is however understandable; he is the MP of one of the constituencies in Kampala, which does not support Kaguta. That way he needs to commiserate with Lukwago, or at least to be seen doing so, in order to stay in his voters’ good books.

When Nsereko Mutumba declared his intention to take over Kampala Central slot, Lukwagoâ€"his predecessor-gave him all the support.

This was despite the fact he (Nsereko) was an NRM candidate. Lukwago supported Nsereko because his moslem brethren, leaders as well as elders at that counseled the troubled Lord Mayor that the faith needed to keep the seat. Even Mengo let Nsereko be because he was a muganda.
