Three women and a man died in separate cases of domestic violence and police have since arrested three people in connection with murders.
National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi yesterday expressed concern at the increasing cases of domestic violence and urged people to solve disputes amicably.
“In one of the reported cases, a Mutare man, Brighton Manyengavana aged 28 killed his wife Rhoda Bonyongwe in Zimunya after accusing her of not giving him pocket money,” he said.

He said Manyengavana who had gone for a beer drink came back home drunk in the afternoon and confronted his wife.
Manyengavana assaulted Bonyongwe who later sought refuge at her uncle’s homestead.
It is alleged that Manyengavana followed and demanded to talk to Bonyongwe.

During the process he picked a log and struck Bonyongwe several times on the head and the whole body. She bled profusely and died the following day.

A 28-year-old man also from Mutare allegedly killed his brother after the latter had a dispute with his wife last Monday.
Kando Maradza (31) died after being struck with an axe handle by Daniel Maradza.

It is alleged that Daniel accused Kando of spending all his money alone and not looking after his wife and children resulting in a fight.
This did not go down well with Kando who confronted his wife and assaulted her.

The wife fled and Kando destroyed some of the property and later assaulted his six-year-old niece.
Daniel heard the noise and armed himself with an axe handle that he used to assault Kando who collapsed and died on the spot.
Chief Supt Nyathi said a Chisumbanje man has been arrested after he fatally assaulted his wife and mother-in-law following a domestic dispute on Monday.

The killings came at time the police were carrying out awareness campaigns countrywide, urging people to desist from domestic violence and not to solve disputes through violent means.

The Anti-domestic Violence Council expressed concern, saying cases of violence within homes continue to rise despite the enactment of a relevant law to curb the vice.

In 2011, 10 667 cases of domestic violence were reported, while 13 170 others were reported in 2012.
In the past 10 months , 9 909 cases have been reported.

The Anti-domestic Violence Council chairman, Mr Kelvin Hazangwi, who is also the director of Padare/ Enkundleni/ Men’s Forum, recently said the nation should strive hard to contain domestic violence in the face of these worrying statistics.

According to the Zimbabwe Demographic and Health Survey, three in every 10 women in Zimbabwe have suffered from some form of physical violence at some point since the age of 15.

In March, Vice President Joice Mujuru said reported cases of domestic violence in Zimbabwe had drastically increased by over 500 percent to nearly 11 000 cases from 2008 to 2012.

Officially launching this year’s International Women’s Day in Harare, Vice President Mujuru said police recorded 1 940 cases of domestic violence in 2008, 3 193 cases in 2009, 7 628 cases in 2010, 10 351 cases in 2011 and 10 871 cases in 2012.

VP Mujuru, who was representing President Mugabe at the commemorations, said the upward trend of the domestic violence cases was a reflection of increased awareness.

“Evidence of the results on the ground include, a greater awareness and increased number of reported cases of domestic violence,” she said.
