South Africa probes deadly blast at Czech fugitive's shop
Two killed and three wounded when in explosion
Johannesburg: South African police were on Wednesday investigating a blast that killed two people at a shop owned by a shadowy Czech fugitive in a plush Johannesburg suburb.
Two people were killed and three others wounded when an explosion went off Tuesday evening inside Money Point, a gold and diamond exchange operation run by Czech businessman Radovan Krejcir in the east Johannesburg suburb of Bedfordview.
Krejcir is currently fighting an attempt by South African authorities to have him extradited to the Czech Republic, where he is wanted for several crimes including tax fraud.
He claims the charges were trumped up because of his political links back home.
Police spokesman Neville Malila said forensic experts were working to determine the type of explosive used in the blast.
"The identities of the two people who died in the explosion have not yet been released," he said.
Malila said the injured were being treated in hospital and one was in a serious condition.
"We are treating this matter as a serious crime. We don't have any suspects at this stage," he said.
According to The Times newspaper, an unknown man walked into the shop and warned that there was a bomb in a bag. The paper said Krejcir was near the shop when the bomb exploded.
The blast is the most recent in a string of deadly attacks appearing to target him.
In July, the controversial businessman escaped a suspected attempt on his life when a machinegun-rigged car fired at him as he entered his business premises, which are near a large shopping mall.
The car later burst into blames.
Last month, a man believed to be his business associate, Sam Issa, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Bedfordview.
South African media report that at least 10 people associated with Krejcir have been killed recently.
