Canada: Muslim police have their official web

Edmonton police have launched a new uniform for its staff Muslim.Like their counterparts in Toronto, police may exercise their profession dressed in a hijab.

The measurement can be surprising: the direction of the Edmonton Police Service, in English Canada, decided to create an outfit for Muslim police with a veil matching uniforms. The initiative does not come from the Muslim community, but the Edmonton Police itself, arguing its willingness to reflect the cultural diversity of the city and attract more women into its ranks. The city has 43,600 people on a Muslim population of 795,600, according to data from "Statistics Canada" dating from 2011.

"Although there are several interpretations of the meaning of the hijab, the police say respect the choice of Muslim women wearing the veil," says a statement.

As underlined site France 24 , this initiative is not a first in Canada: Toronto police are allowed to wear the veil since 2011. But this announcement comes as the Quebec neighbor, heir to a French concept of secularism, seems ready to outlaw the wearing of headscarves, turbans, skullcaps and other religious symbols in public institutions, including universities.

Canada: les policières musulmanes ont leur voile officiel

La police d'Edmonton a lancé un nouvel uniforme pour ses agents de confession musulmane. Comme leurs consœurs de Toronto, les policières pourront exercer leur métier vêtues d'un hijab.

La mesure peut surprendre: la direction de la police d'Edmonton, au Canada anglophone, a décidé de créer  une tenue pour les policières musulmanes avec un voile assorti à l'uniforme. L'initiative n'émane pas de la communauté musulmane, mais de la police d'Edmonton elle-même, arguant sa volonté de refléter la diversité culturelle de la ville et d'attirer davantage de femmes dans ses rangs. La  ville compte 43 600 personnes de confession musulmane sur une population de 795 600, selon les données de «Statistique Canada» datant de 2011.

«Bien qu'il y ait plusieurs interprétations quant à la signification du hijab, le police dit respecter le choix des musulmanes portant le voile», explique un communiqué.

Comme le souligne le site France 24, cette initiative n'est pas une première au Canada: les policières de Toronto sont autorisées à porter le voile depuis 2011. Mais cette annonce survient alors que le Québec voisin, héritier d'une conception française de la laïcité,  semble prêt à légiférer pour interdire le port du voile, le turban, la kippa et les autres signes religieux dans les établissements publics, dont les universités.
