{UAH} UPDF Starts Somalia Recruitment
Over 200 Veterans and local Defense Forces personnel turned up on Friday at the UPDF 2nd Division headquarters in Makenke barracks in Mbarara for recruitment and subsequent deployment to Somalia.
Major Ronald Kakurungu, the UPDF 2nd division spokesperson says the army is targeting to recruit 2200 personnel across the country. He says the two days exercise at Makenke barracks targets to recruit 217 ex-servicemen from Mbarara, Isingiro, Ibanda and Kiruhura districts.
He says another 133 ex-servicemen will be recruited at Muhokya barracks in Kasese. Kakurungu the recruits who qualify will join the Uganda battle group 31 in Somalia after going through refresher training at Hima army training wing. Kakurungu says those seeking to be recruited must be physically and mentally fit subject.
In November this year, the UN Security Council asked UPDF to deploy an additional 2500 troops in Somalia. However, UPDF failed to act immediately citing inadequate manpower.
