Lira- Police in Lira District yesterday arrested and charged the former MP for Erute North for allegedly spreading harmful propaganda against the government.
Mr Charles Angiro Gutumoi was detained at Lira Central Police Station after being summoned by the force.

The North Kyoga regional police spokesperson, Mr Manshur Suwed, said the suspect allegedly spread harmful propaganda against the police and implicated President Museveni during a talk show on a radio station recently.

Police also said the former MP tarnished the reputation of the President.
Mr Mike Adoko, a co-presenter of the programme, was arrested on Friday and later granted police bond after recording a statement.

Speaking to the Daily Monitor, Mr Gutumoi said he did not know why he was being detained.

"What angered police is the mere fact that the listeners got to know that police had failed in their constitutional mandate of protecting lives and property of the locals," he added.

Human rights activist Jonathan Odur criticised the manner in which the former legislator was apprehended.

"The manner in which he was arrested is questionable because the police acted on order by the NRM leadership in Lira," he said, adding that the party was using the police to satisfy their interest.

The deputy executive director of Facilitation for Peace and Development, a human rights organisation, urged the police to stick to their constitutional mandate of keeping law and order and not "keeping politics".

By press time, the former legislator was still under police custody.
