Kenyatta Flies to Juba
President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to make a one day official visit to Juba, South Sudan as part of his and region’s efforts to bring peace to the youngest nation today, Wednesday February 25, 2014.
“The plane carrying the President and his delegation departs Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 8.00am and returns later in the evening,” according to Kenya State House sources.
This follows yesterday’s National Security Council meeting that recommended the deployment of more 310 KDF soldiers to South Sudan.
The first time Kenyatta ordered such a deployment was in December last year, purposely to evacuate Kenyan nationals who were stranded in Juba and other parts.
Now, this additional force is a peace keeping force following the proposed withdraw of Ugandan troops from military combat against South Sudan rebels.
In December last year still, Kenyatta together with the Ethiopian Prime Minister, Hailemariam Dessalegn, visited President Salva Kiir and urged him on cessation of hostilities as well as accepting the peace talks.
This was to afterwards see the IGAD Summit held in Nairobi Kenya to forge a way forward in a move to resolve the South Sudan conflict.
At the beginning of this year, President Kiir, released 7 of the 11 former political detainees and handed them over to Kenyatta on bail.
With renewed fighting amidst Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, Kenyatta is once more concerned about the South Sudan situation hence today’s visit to Juba.
