NRM councillor held over opposing MPs resolution

SHEEMA/BUSHENYI.

Police in Sheema District have arrested the LC5 councillor for Kigarama Sub-county for allegedly collecting signatures to compel NRM to convene a delegates’ conference and discuss the recent MPs endorsement of Mr Museveni as the party’s sole candidate for the 2016 elections.
Mr Charles Tugume recorded a statement at Sheema Central Police Station with CIID detectives.

Sheema District police commander Ezekiel Emitu confirmed the arrest and said the matter is still under investigation.
“A file has been opened and police are trying to verify the matters being labelled against him and several other people who are yet to be identified,” Mr Emitu said.

A source at police that asked to stay anonymous because he is not authorised to speak to the press, told the Daily Monitor Mr Tugume had been arrested on allegations that “he had been collecting signatures to cause the convening of the NRM party delegates’ conference to reject a recent endorsement of President Museveni by NRM Members of Parliament as the party’s flag bearer for the 2016 elections.
MPs resolved that President Museveni runs unopposed as the party flag bearer in 2016.
Sources who saw the list said Mr Tugume had collected 33 signatures from sub-county councillors of Kigarama, Masheruka and Kyangyenyi in Sheema District.
