On Sunday May 4, four other NRM youths were arrested after they convened at Makerere Primary School in Bwaise to discuss their preferred NRM candidate to contest for the 2016 presidential polls.
Youths claiming to belong to the NRM Poor Youth Forum Kyadondo, Mr Mubarak Senteza the group's vice chairperson, Mr Vincent Kaggwa the coordinator, together with Mr Eric Semakula and Mr Ssekyanzi Jackson, all NRM youth leaders from Kawempe Division were detained at the Wandegeya Police
station before their meeting commenced.
This came just two days after the State dropped charges against NRM youth leaders; Mr Omodo-Omodo, 29, the NRM Youth League Vice Chairperson for Northern Region and Mr Adam Luzindana Buyinza, 31, the NRM Youth League Vice Chairperson, on charges of abuse of office.
However, the bigger picture is that these youths have been traversing the countryside mobilizing support to convince the party Secretary General and Premier Rt Hon Mbabazi to challenge President Yoweri Museveni in 2016 for president.
Severally, Rt Hon Mbabazi has said he will not stand against his historical comrade but will remain politically active.
The Director Public Prosecution's office told court that the NRM party had resolved to settle their internal wrangles outside court, forming the basis for the withdrawal of the case.
Prosecution had accused Mr Omodo-Omodo and Mr Luzindana of abusing their authority when they bribed and tricked NRM members and mobilisers into signing a petition to convene a delegates' conference.
The conference was reportedly meant to discuss an earlier resolution by the party's parliamentary caucus to endorse President Museveni as its sole presidential candidate for the 2016 elections.
But Luzindana and Omodo-Omodo are not employees of the government or even NRM. They were elected to the positions they hold, so abuse of office could not hold.
It is unlikely how the arrest of more NRM youths will play out in party politics considering that the party chairman had become convinced by the youth leaders that there was no more cause for alarm.
The arrest could also deepen the rift between the various party youth groups allied to different personalities and further dampen hopes for a peaceful youth delegates' conference on May 15 expected to be attended by both the party Chairman and Secretary General.
"We are tired of Museveni campaigning against term limits and yet he is going around the country dishing out money to endorse him as sole candidate in 2016," said Mr Richard K. Nkuba the NRM Poor Youth chairperson.
Police say they will interrogate the youths for participating in an illegal assembly. "They did not follow rightful procedures and the materials we have recovered from them show messages which were inciting the public to rally support for Mr Mbabazi," a police officer that oversaw the arrest said.
