KAMPALA- Opposition Uganda Peoples Congress party (UPC) has called on the government to come up with a policy and rules to be followed by kingdoms on how they make their demands.
"The party urges the government to intervene with a policy, but not kingdoms to demand without proper rules to be followed," said Mr Okello Lucima, the party's spokesperson, said during a weekly news conference at the party's headquarters at Uganda House yesterday.

"UPC as a pan-African party, we note with deep concern what is happening in the country and among the kingdoms themselves."

The demands by UPC come barely two months after the government returned 213 land tittles to Buganda Kingdom, and since then several kingdoms, including Tooro and Rwenzururu, have come up to demand for their properties.

However, Mr Ofwono Opondo, the government spokesperson, said UPC has no right to ask for the policy because it was the UPC regime that seized kingdoms' properties in 1966.

"We have the joint cultural committee which governs the cultural institutions property and has a right to return them after verification of ownership," Mr Opondo said.
Separately, UPC also faulted the government for failure to build a national unity, saying it has led to the inter-tribal conflict; segregation and nepotism in the country.
