{UAH} Makerere starts endowment fund programme: good but wrong team

This new funding initiative for Makerere has barely started. Please give it a chance to get some traction instead of throwing stones at it.

Subject: {UAH} Makerere starts endowment fund programme: good but wrong team

Folks;

The story in the Monitor at the link below is great news for Makerere and other Ugandan Universities. However the composition of the team of trustees is terribly wrong.

Dr Martin  Aliker is the head of the fund. Other members include : Mr Gerald Karuhanga (Western Youth MP), Mr Barnabas Tumusingize, (managing partner with Sebalu & Lule Advocates and Legal Consultants), Mr Grace Isabirye (certified public accountant), Mr Martin Owiny (former board member of Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) Uganda Ltd) and Ambassador Edith Ssempala.

First of all, it only has one woman on board. Are there no qualified women alumni from Makerere. Sure if MP Karuhanga (wrong move) could make it, there are many, and I repeat many well qualified and connected women to serve on the board of trustees.
second, the board of trustees is short of investment professionals. Who on the board of trustees holds a CFA?

If the council was serious it should have sourced men and women of substance and connections in the financial world.  Mr Aliker is fine. Makerere should have asked the following to serve on the board.  Eng. Ivan Kyayonka the former CEO of Shell Uganda; Eng Mugerwa the former CEO/Chairman of Shell Kenya (now with Tullow oil Uganda), Mr. Bitature and yes Mr. Elly Karuhanga and others. These are individuals who can fundraise millions, if not billions of Ugs shillings for the fund. Where are the successful entrepreneurs? Yes like the funders of the Monitor who became filthy rich so they say after selling their majority stake to HH the Aga Khan. The fund should be populated by women and men who have made important financial decisions.  There is the lady who was Director of Bank supervision at BOU, Mrs. Noami-sorry I forget her last name, but was one of the senior executive at BOU and is now retired.    Then there is Mrs Justine Bagyenda also of  BOU.  Simply, why are successful Ugandan women missing on the fund?
