Tanzania: Simiyu Family Arrested for Farming While Naked
Busega — FOUR people from the same family were on Sunday morning nabbed by the police in Busega Ward, Simiyu Region, after they were found cultivating their farm naked.
Simiyu Acting Regional Police Commander, (RPC) Venance Kimario, confirmed the incident saying that police responded following a tip from a good citizen at Bushigwamala Village, in Kivukoni Division, Busega District in the region.
Acting RPC Kimario mentioned the arrested family members as Makoye Gamoge (42), the father; Neema Kugela (31), the mother; as well as their son Juma Makoye (15) and daughter Esther Makoye (12), both pupils at Bushigwamala Primary School.
"The four did not flee after seeing police officers approaching them at around 6am but continued with their work singing without being bothered by the presence of the officers, till they were ordered to put their tools down," the Acting Police Commander explained.
According to the police, the father, Gamoge, claimed that the act (of farming while naked) is part and parcel of Nyantuzu (Sukuma ethnic segment) aimed at influencing adequate rains and bumper harvest and by doing so, they pay homage to the ancestors.
Gamoge went on to tell the police that his family consulted a witch doctor who assured them of a "green revolution" if they adhere to the instruction of farming naked, early in the morning.
