South African pilot fined for nudity
July 2, 2014 — South Africa's flagship airline, South African Airways, had to delay one of its flights from Zimbabwe on Tuesday after one of its pilots stripped naked at the airport
The pilot identified as Capt. W van Ginkel was arrested after he stripped naked at the Harare International Airport in apparent protest at being unnecessarily searched by security personnel at the metal detectors.
According to reports, it took several hours for a replacement to arrive and fly the 90 passengers across the border into South Africa.
Zimbabwean national police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said "We have arrested one person at Harare International Airport this morning in connection with misconduct. He has been charged with criminal nuisance and has since deposited a fine."
Witnesses say that van Ginkel set off the metal detectors as he walked through. After removing his shoes, he was instructed to remove his belt. As he became frustrated, he removed his pants and remained in his underwear.
The flight had been delayed as officials were concerned the pilot may be mentally unstable.
SAA spokesman Tlali Tlali said the airman had been charged with indecent exposure and fined. He has been working for SAA for 19 years.
