KAMPALA

Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has given Shs50 million as compensation to the parents of the toddler who was knocked dead at the authority offices in Kampala last year.

Mr Anwali Baguma, the KCCA driver who allegedly knocked the toddler, Ryan Ssemaganda dead told Buganda Road Magistrate's Court that the mother of the deceased, Ms Madinah Namutebi made an additional statement at police withdrawing her complaint against him (Baguma) upon receiving the said money.
Court records indicate that Shs50million which was paid to the parents of the deceased is exclusive of the Shs2.4million which KCCA offered to the deceased's family earlier on to help in burial arrangements.

Subsequently, Grade One magistrate, Ms Joan Aciro adjourned the case, in which Mr Baguma (suspect) is accused of causing the toddler's death through careless driving, to February when the Directorate of Public Prosecution is expected to notify court his position in the case.

At the time he was charged, Mr Baguma pleaded guilty to the case.
The toddler was run over at KCCA court premises by a KCCA vehicle driven by Mr Baguma after he had been taken there to breast feed from his mother who had been arrested by KCCA law enforcers for hawking merchandise within the city centre.

Prosecution states that on November 18, at KCCA parking yard, Mr Baguma while reversing motor vehicle registration number LG 0428-01 Everest, silver in colour, carelessly in a manner disregard to all the circumstances and without due consideration knocked , Ssemaganda who had taken refuge under the vehicle when his mother was being arraigned before Court.

The mother, Ms Namutebi , had reportedly pleaded with the KCCA law enforcers to allow her breast-feed Ssemaganda in vain. Ssemaganda, who needed the mother's presence, later crawled beneath the parked car and remained unattended to. When the driver later ignited the car and reversed, it ran over him.
