Mangaung Municipality is busy installing power lines after 10 years of darkness.
Prostitutes are happy that electricity is coming to Caleb Motshabi kasi near Mangaung. They say then they will be able to work day and night then.
Since 2005 they have only been able to work during the day.
"When we get lights we'll be able to offer our services 24 hours a day. At the moment we can't do business at night because it is pitch dark. Thugs take our money and disappear into the dark," said Motlalepule Sekoene (27).
Motlalepule said she came from Benoni, Gauteng in 2006. She has been surviving on prostitution to feed her two children aged five and eight.
"I had just lost my job as a security guard and I didn't have money to pay rent so I came here to become a prostitute," she said.
Another sex worker, known only as Precious, said it is dangerous at night because they can get mugged, assaulted or raped.
"The lights will help us. I will only work night shift because during the day people swear at us for being prostitutes. But for now, while I'm waiting, I work from 6am and go home before sunset," she said.
Ratang Mosifa (22) said she was stubborn and worked at night. "The women said it was dangerous but I was stubborn. That was until I was robbed and nearly strangled."
Municipal spokesman Qondile Khedama said: "The first phase should be finished by the end of the next financial year, which starts on 1 July. The executive mayor wants all informal areas electrified during his term of office."
Other citizens of Caleb Motshabi are also excited about the electricity.
"I've bought myself an electric stove, TV, kettle and a heater. When the electricity comes, I'll be ready!" said Masechaba Motse (41).
