Kenya: U.S. Boy, 17, Kills His Kenyan Stepfather

A Kenyan living in the United States was on Monday killed by his stepson following an argument about household chores.

Josphat Kobia, 34, was fatally shot by Cameron Barnes after they argued about the boy's failure to clean his room.

According to police statements recorded in Baltimore, 17-year-old Barnes grabbed a gun from his waistband and shot Kobia in the head.

Police were called in and found Kobia lying in a pool of blood in his house's basement.

He was declared dead at the scene. Barnes gave a videotaped statement at the Baltimore police headquarters in which he confessed to the fatal shooting.

The boy and his grandmother Joyce voluntarily presented themselves at the headquarters where they asked for the detective in charge of the case, John McGrath.

Barnes was charged, as an adult, with first-degree murder.

Kobia's wife Tamara Harvey was also charged.

Barnes was charged after the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that the manner and cause of death were homicide by shooting.

Harvey's involvement remains unclear.

In charge documents, police wrote that she had given inconsistent statements and admitted to being in the house and hearing a "pop" which she "did not investigate."

Kobia was very well known in the Kenyan community in Baltimore.

Kenyans in Baltimore asked the local police to expedite investigations.

The body is expected to be flown to Kenya after police complete investigations.

Kobia was from Meru county.
