Man permits marriage between his 13-year-old daughter and her rapist
January 10, 2015 — The father of a 13-year-old girl who was gang-raped by four young men in Kano state, Nigeria, has accepted the proposal by one of the men to marry the child
The rape took place in a town called Tudun Rubudi and was perpetrated by four men – Sani Isa, Usaini Ja'afar, Jamilu Sani and Isa Musa.
Kano state, where the rape occurred, is officially the most populated state in Nigeria and is a predominantly Muslim state. The men were arrested by the Hisbah (accountability) board in an uncompleted building after the act. They all confessed to the crime.
One of them, Usaini Ja'afar, then requested to marry the abused child and asked for the blessings of her father, Malam Ya'u, who is a mechanic. In a shocking twist, Ya'u accepted the proposal and has now fixed a date for the wedding.
Ya'u spoke to Weekly Trust newspaper on why he accepted Ja'afar's proposition.
He said that he took the four men to court but pleas came from "all angles", and "when all of them showed remorse, especially the one pleading to marry her, Ja'afar, I decided to temper justice with mercy."
Already, Ja'afar has visited Ya'u with an uncle of his who the girl's father was already acquainted with as a first step to tying the knot with the girl.
"I accepted the request and will marry her off to him. I decided to allow him marry the girl because our consultations with our Malams (Islamic clerics) showed that there is nothing wrong about that," said the father.
Ya'u said that medical tests shows his daughter to be "okay" and he has advised his future son-in-law to "become a more responsible person who would be useful to himself and society."
