Afande Kaweesi outwits Oguttu

It seems the running battles with the opposition leaders on Kampala streets have made a very clever man out of the director of police operations, Andrew Felix Kaweesi.

Once seen as shy or even ill at ease, Kaweesi these days does not worry about being challenged by any politician. He has found his tongue and seems to enjoy the game of political spin, while retaining a pleasant smile that makes him worth the handshake of an 'enemy'.

While patrolling the 220 polling stations in the recently-concluded LC-V by-elections in Busia, Kaweesi bumped into the parliamentary leader of opposition, who accused the police of being accomplices to electoral malpractices.

"Afande Kaweesi, it's so unfortunate that your police are arresting our agents illegally under your watch. I'm wondering whether the police is part of NRM," Oguttu said.

He later added:  "You being an NRM, Afande Kaweesi, these policemen being used are tarnishing the image of your party."

However, Kaweesi soon threw Oguttu's statement back at him, retorting: "Hon Oguttu, when did you recruit me into NRM?"

Oguttu had no answer but diplomatically admitted the challenge from Kaweesi who was smiling broad ear to broad ear, on realizing that he had outwitted the politician. Embarrassed by the outburst laughter from journalists who waited for an answer from him, Oguttu smiled: "That is nice! that is nice! That's nice!"

And the two shook hands!
