Dlamini-Zuma: I will see what the universe throws at me
African Union commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said she still wasn't sure if she would stand for a second term in the job next year, or even whether she might retire.
Taking extra time to speak to journalists following a press conference at the end of the AU summit in Addis Ababa late on Saturday night, Dlamini-Zuma said she wasn't fond of personal long-term planning.
"You know ever since I was an adult I'm not very good at personal long-term plans, because I think the universe throws things at you, or takes you off your path that you plan, so I don't plan very long term. I just try and concentrate on what I'm doing.
"I try to do my best at where I am, and after that I will see what the universe throws. It might throw retirement, it might throw anything, who knows," she said.
Dlamini-Zuma, who has been mooted as a possible candidate to replace President Jacob Zuma as ANC president at the party's conference in 2017, said she had "no idea" what people were saying about her back home because she doesn't really get South African news in Addis.
Her term at the AU expires next year and talk in the corridors has it that she is not going to make a bid for a second term. She and those close to her have, however, refused to confirm this.
The name of Algerian foreign minister and former AU commissioner Ramtane Lamamra is already being mentioned as a possible contender for Dlamini-Zuma's position next year.
