This is a locomotive of the Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) going from Kampala to Kasese via Kyenjojo, before it was mismanaged and run down. The Gov't of Uganda inherited a properly functioning and well-maintained railway system from the British administrator before their departure in 1962. When NRA/M bush guerrillas captured power in January 1986, they found URC properly operating its Kampala-Kasese route; therefore it is obliged to first restore that western railway route before using Ugandan taxpayers' money to build new lines going to Rwanda or South Sudan.

Mr. Kirunda Kivejinja was forced resign as minister of Works, Transport and Communications in 1997 after MPs collected signatures to censure him over accusations of corruption, fuel-smuggling and that he had diverted 2,000 litres of fuel from Uganda Railways, under his ministry, for personal use - See more at: http://www.independent.co.ug/column/insight/478-19-ministers-ugandans-dont-want. He was the minister of Transport and URC was under his docket. The managers of URC were acting under his directions, and disobeying his superior instructions would amount to gross misconduct of insubordination warranting dismissal..Under the present Constitution of Uganda cabinet ministers like former Transport Minister Mr. Kivejinja act at the behest of the President of Uganda.

----Article 112(3) of the Constitution of Uganda 1995 states: "A Cabinet Minister shall have responsibility for such functions of Government as the President may, from time to time, assign to him or her."

---Article 117 of the Constitution says: "ministers shall individually be accountable to the President for the administration of their Ministries."

The Busoga line BELOW, which was also functional 30 years ago. Now it is no more..... all lines were vandalised and openly sold to steel mills in Jinja.

If you now look at what used to be Namasagali railway station, and many others, you know that there is a real problem in the governance system of the country. The agro-produce from Busoga used to be transported cheaply to the markets with that line.

With the introduction of the Busoga line, it is memorable that retailing got transformed and new traffic was encouraged in perishable goods -- meat, fish, fresh milk and vegetables. Some Basoga farmers used to cheaply transport their animals (goats and cows) up to the main abattoirs/market at Lufula in Kyetume, Mukono and meat parkers at Bugolobi, Kampala. Cheaper and cheaper rail travel had also stimulated the growth of leisure facilities. Uganda railways could transport freight in large quantity and this was the key to their success.

The extension of rail services in Busoga region was accompanied by an improvement in communications at all levels, through t postal services and newspapers, which were all highly dependent on rail facilities of URC. The basic rail network, organisational structure and traffic patterns -- had been established the British administrators before leaving in 1962. There is no doubt that the contribution of Uganda railways to the economy of the country was substantial.

The health of any thriving economy is shown by the quality of its railway transport system. The Ugandan economy is really sick, and needs urgent treatment - its management and system of government needs changing. The unpatriotic persons who mismanaged and run down the Ugandan railways must be held responsible for their actions.

3.In 1908, at Kisumu port , Nyanza, Kenya is Mrs. Florence Preston (wife to Ronald Preston) and other British engineers with an Alsatian dog, while at the end of Uganda Railway on Lake Victoria at Kisumu. The place was renamed Port Florence in honour of Mrs. Florence Preston. The 660-mile railway track reached the shores of Lake Victoria from Mombasa in 1901. on 30 May 1896 construction of the Uganda railway from Kilindini harbour commenced. Kilindi Harbour is naturally endowed with deep waters for ships to dock. "Kilindini" is an old Swahili term which means "deep." Kilindini Harbour is the main part of the Port of Mombasa, the only international seaport in Kenya. The port is so called because the channel is naturally very deep.

4.Kampala-Kasese rail line NOW under the liberators. These are Thysen-Alstom engines which are supposed to last forever. What a sad and criminal waste!
