The economy of sacrifice? War Bond holders and the financing of the First World War, 1914–192

Supervised by Dr Alastair Owens (Geography) and Dr Dan Todman (History), Queen Mary University of London Dr Mike Anson (Bank of England, Archive)

The Schools of Geography and History at Queen Mary University of
London and the Bank of England invite applications for the following doctoral studentship commencing on 1 October 2015:

The economy of sacrifice: war bond holders and the financing of the First World War, 1914– 1925.

Using privileged access to the Bank of England's records, this project seeks to investigate who invested in First World War bonds during the conflict and in the years immediately after. It aims to identify the government's creditors in order to reconstruct the body of investors who, by purchasing the bonds, loaned the government the money to fund the war effort. This analysis will enable the student to address questions about how the community of investors (and the national community in wartime) was constructed at the time and afterwards; regional experiences of profit and loss as a result of the conflict, and the development of post-war political debates about the responsibility for paying for, and benefiting from, a cataclysmic conflict.

Alongside being the first major 'demand side' study of popular investment in the financial instruments that underpinned the resourcing of World War One, making a substantial contribution to the economic and social history of twentieth-century Britain, the project will generate a range of other outputs for the Bank's staff, visitors and the public: 1) Better cataloguing and documentation of the War Bond Ledgers for future archive users, (via webbased information and researcher guides); 2) A new exhibition/display for the Bank's museum, with associated learning materials for use with schools and other visitors; 3) A range of wider public engagement activities, linking with the War's centenary, including a one-day conference on 'War and Finance', and media work.

The three year award covers fees and an annual maintenance grant. For further details about the studentship and how to apply, please go to: http://www.geog.qmul.ac.uk/admissions/phdadmissions/funded/146733.pdf

The closing date is Monday 23 February 2015 (applications should be received by 5pm). It is anticipated that interviews with short-listed candidates will be held in mid-March 2015. Please note that usual AHRC eligibility rules apply to this studentship. This includes the requirement that candidates will normally have a master's degree or similar postgraduate qualification prior to the start date of the studentship.
