NEW DELHI - A 35-year-old Nigerian woman was allegedly gang-raped in a moving car in the Indian capital, police said Saturday.

The woman was found unconscious near a toll plaza in east Delhi on Friday and taken to hospital for treatment.

The victim was picked up by four men outside a mall in south Delhi and assaulted inside their car before she was thrown out of the vehicle, police said.

"We have arrested the four suspects, all of whom are between the ages of 25 to 30 years. We are awaiting the results of the medical tests," investigating officer Rajender Kumar said.

Footage obtained from close-circuit television cameras showed the victim being thrown out of the vehicle near the toll plaza, he said. Police have impounded the car.

Local media reports said the victim was a tourist.

In December, a Japanese tourist was allegedly raped by five men posing as tour guides near Bodhgaya, a Buddhist pilgrimage town.

In 2012, the fatal gang rape of an Indian student on a bus in New Delhi led to a massive public outcry and tougher laws.

Despite this, sexual crimes continue unabated and concerns are rising over the lack of safety for women in the South Asian country.

Data released by police shows that more than 2,000 rape cases were registered in New Delhi in 2014, a jump of more than 30% compared to the previous year.
