IN SUMMARY

Bishop Kisekka was elected Bishop of Luweero Diocese in 1996 and he is set to retire this year.

Luweero- Luweero Diocese outgoing Bishop Evans Mukasa Kisseka has attributed the slow progress in development programmes in greater Luweero District to poverty at household level.

The cleric said the Church, through its social development arm, has tried to initiate and support poverty reduction projects in Luweero, Nakasongola and Nakaseke districts but poverty persists in many families.

"This is one area where I am not impressed," Bishop Kisekka said.

"Reducing poverty among the people of Luweero was among my top priority programmes on top of evangelism," The bishop said in an interview after his farewell address to Christians at St Mark Cathedral in Luweero Town on Saturday.

Set to go out
Bishop Kisekka was elected Bishop of Luweero Diocese in 1996 and he is set to retire this year.

"We need a united effort among all stake holders in tackling poverty in greater Luweero," he said.

The bishop noted that for the past 18 years, the Church tried to initiate projects aimed at helping residents overcome poverty but the situation is still not good.

NEW BISHOP
The House of Bishops, Church of Uganda on January 15, elected Canon Eridard Kironde Nsubuga as new bishop of Luweero to succeed Bishop Evans Mukasa Kisseka who clocked the mandatory retirement age of 65 in 2014. Bishop Nsubuga will be consecrated on May 17 as third bishop of Luweero Diocese after Bishop Kisseka who was consecrated in 1996 replacing Bishop Misusera Bugimbi, the pioneer bishop who died last year.
