POLICE on Saturday held local musician Rachael Nancy alias Desire Luzinda for eight hours for among others, allegedly procuring a Ugandan passport for her ex-Nigerian boyfriend, Franklin Emuobor.

Police arrested Luzinda at 11:00am on Saturday, moments after she had alighted from a Kenya Airways flight at Entebbe International Airport. She was then whisked to the police's Special Investigations Division (SID) in Kireka, a city suburb for interrogation and to record a statement.

Police sources said the arrest comes after the singer who has been in the middle of a storm following the release of her nude photographs, repeatedly snubbed earlier police summons with regard to the passport issue.

Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson said Luzinda was arrested for not honouring police summons, obtaining money by false pretense and procuring a Ugandan passport for a Nigerian national.

"Luzinda has been under probe and police wanted to establish under which circumstances she (Luzinda) obtained sh24m from a Cavendish University lecturer, Jimmy Alemiga, who claims she has failed to pay back," Enanga said.

He added: "Luzinda is also under probe for procuring a passport for her ex-Nigerian boyfriend who reportedly leaked the nude pictures on social media."

Luzinda was released on bond after recording two statements.

GENESIS OF LUZINDA'S WOES

Luzinda was dragged to Police over a sh81m debt. She has allegedly declined to pay the money for the past nine months.

According to Police, Luzinda used the money to organize music shows but has since failed to pay back.

Luzinda reportedly borrowed the money from Jimmy Alemiga, a lecturer at Cavendish University located along Ggaba Road.

Alemiga sought help from Police after Desire became 'reluctant' to pay back the money. He reported the matter to Police's Special Investigations Division (SID).

CHARGES

Police records reveal that while borrowing the money Luzinda used the pseudonym of Racheal Nancy. The money was reportedly lent to Desire in July of 2014.

"It is nine months since then and there has been no sign of Desire paying back," Alemiga complains.

Police has since recorded a statement from Luzinda in which she denies knowledge of receiving money from Alemiga.

"My ex-boyfriend (Emuobor) is the one who borrowed the money to facilitate my music shows, not me," Luzinda explains in a recorded statement at SID under SD REF 11/12/01/15, with the charge of obtaining money by false pretense.

Luzinda claims that Emuobor is supposed to be held responsible for payment. In a message exchange however, Franklin clarifies that he wants to pay the money and let bygones be bygones.

These allegations did not go well with Alemiga when contacted. He insists that he lent the money to Desire, and not to any other person. Since July 2014, Desire had never refuted borrowing the money.

However, when Alemiga sought help from Police to recover the money, she changed tune by claiming that she had never borrowed the money.

"Alemiga is angry because everyone else has been paid apart from him. We are going to pay him," says Sam Yiga, Desire's manager.

"It is even less than sh50m. He probably dreamt about that figure of sh1m," he adds.

"I have over 1000 messages of her (Luzinda) pleading for time as she continues to look for money. I have been patient enough but there is no sign of money coming through," he said.

In one of them, Desire suggests ways in which she will soon pay back the money. She says she is going to sell off her land and pay back as soon as possible. To entice Alemiga, she says the buyers are already head over heels for the deal.

Alemiga insists that Desire Luzinda sent the messages from her mobile number to his.

"She used the same number she had at the time of receiving the money from me," he argues.

He is shocked that Luzinda now claims to not have had any dealing with him. Adding that, those messages are from his mobile number to hers, including one that states that, she was going to sell her land in order to pay but nothing went through," he said.

WHY ALEMIGA WANTS HIS MONEY NOW

A fortnight ago, Luzinda's manager, Sam Yiga informed The Kampala Sun that the singer made quite some money last month in performance fees.

He went further and explained that she had used 80% of the money made to pay back debts.

Sources close to the university lecturer tell us that those comments are the ones that awaken the lecturer's interest in getting back his money.

"He thought everyone was being paid part from him," explains the source. He is thus determined to get his money while Desire Luzinda takes her Kitone performances all over the place.

Although Yiga refuted the rumour that Desire Luzinda now earns about sh5m for a performance, it did not deter Alemiga from chasing for his money.

"Jimmy (Alemiga) is a clever guy. He knows that if he gets Desire arrested, she will be bailed out by rich men," says his friend.

The last time court bailiffs and money lenders took on Desire, Al Hajji Nasser Ntege Ssebagala bailed her out. It is also rumoured that several other of her rich male friends offered to pay fractions of the debt.
