Museveni is an elected politician not a monarch. Moreso, from 1981-86, M7 and others were also accused of engaging in treasonous acts, when they decided to pick up arms and fight the then Government of Uganda.
The anachronistic law on treason must abolished or struck down, because it has often been abused for a long time in Uganda.. In England where it originated, the law of treason dates from the Treason Act 1351, enacted during the reign of King Edward III of England. The offence of treason is an ancient crime which forbids levying a war against the monarch or King, adhering to his foes, or contemplating his death. During the medieval times, treason suspects in England, used to be tried and if found guilty, would be executed in the Tower of London, either by sending them to the gallows (hanging) or beheaded.
The13th century treason legislation defined treason to include disloyal and subversive thoughts contrary to the King's will and also encompassed expression of dissenting views or acts contrary to the monarch. Freedom of speech and expression wasn't seen as a fundamental human right during the 13th century.
Treason is an ancient crime, but it fell into disuse in most western democratic and civilised nation-states or countries, after World War II, when the United Nations became committed to upholding, promoting and protecting the human rights of every individual, This commitment stems from the United Nations Charter, which reaffirms the faith of the peoples of the world in fundamental human rights and in the dignity and worth of the human person. In the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights ["UDHR"], of which the present government of Uganda is a signatory, the United Nations stated in clear and simple terms the rights which belong equally to every person..
The word for treason was first used in the English language in the 1200s, and appears to be related to a French word, traison.
