By Khanyo Olwethu Mjamba on February 26, 2015 — U.S. President Barack Obama has nominated a diplomat to be the first U.S. Ambassador to Somalia in almost 25 years, to fill a position that was vacated when the U.S. government pulled out its diplomatic staff from the country in 1991
U.S. President Barack Obama has nominated a "career diplomat" to fill the position of U.S. Ambassador to Somalia, a position that has been vacant since the doomed Black Hawk Down evacuation.
According to a statement by the US Department of State, the nomination of symbolises improving relations between the two countries.
"This historic nomination signals the deepening relationship between the United States and Somalia," reads the statement from the department, "It also allows us to mark the progress of the Somali people toward emerging from decades of conflict."
In 1992 the United States attempted to intervene in the east African country following the overthrowing of President Siad Barre. This resulted in a conflict with war lords.
In the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993, 18 U.S. soldiers were killed and two helicopters shot down in fighting against Somali militias. Hundreds of Somalis also died in the battle, which was depicted in the film "Black Hawk Down".
