Dogs and flies feasting on dead bodies in Iganga hospital mortuary

Residents of Iganga Municipality have expressed concern about the growing stench of dead bodies from Iganga Hospital.

Dead bodies are dumped in a makeshift structure without a door leaving dogs and flies to feast on them. The structure also lacks a roof.

During a ministerial visit on Tuesday, residents said that the makeshift mortuary produces a stench that makes it difficult for residents to live a normal life.

The old mortuary was demolished last year to pave way for the construction of the outpatient department. Many bodies are brought by the Police and end up unclaimed. There is also no easy access to the damp mortuary.

Booza Asuman the mortuary attendant lives a life of despair. He avoids the stench by burning old car tyres, whose strong smell drives flies away.
But for Iganga hospital it's not all about the mortuary, the hospital is hygienically challenged. There is poor waste disposal, which puts the new buildings under construction at risk.

The health facility that serves the population of Namutumba, Luuka, Kaliro and was constructed in the 1960's. The Sh12 billion renovation project will see the facility get new wards, staff quarters, a new mortuary, and other essential infrastructure.
