Standard Digital News - Kenya : 'Raila okayed release of Namwamba tape to House team'

ODM leader Raila Odinga with Ababu Namwamba

NAIROBI: Coalition for Reforms and Democracy leader Raila Odinga was aware of Budalang'i MP Ababu Namwamba's recording of bribery claims by fellow parliamentary watchdog committee members, officials have said.

Raila reportedly told his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party's National Executive Council (NEC) meeting that he had sanctioned the tabling of the tape by Mr Namwamba before a National Assembly committee investigating allegations of corruption in the Public Accounts Committee ( PAC).

Raila, who chaired the NEC at Orange House Tuesday, "told the officials the ODM secretary general had consulted him before the tape was released".

"The party leader told us the SG had consulted him about the secret tape and he sanctioned its release to the House committee," a NEC member told The Standard. Three other NEC officials confirmed Raila's remarks.

Before the meeting kicked off, Raila and Namwamba met for about 30 minutes but the officials said they did not know what the two had discussed.

Officials said during the meeting, Raila said the fight against corruption was a difficult task and required sacrifice even if it meant one was left standing alone.

They said he recalled that in the 1990s, while serving as an Opposition MP, some of his colleagues "ganged up to throw him out of PAC, which was investigating the Goldenberg scandal in similar circumstances as Namwamba's". After the meeting, the CORD leader left for Kajiado Central to join MP-elect Elijah Memusi in victory celebrations.

Later, the Orange party demanded that investigations should be extended to other parliamentary committees marred by corruption claims.
