KAMPALA. Buganda Kingdom is to take tough action against its employees who divert money meant for kingdom projects, the Katikkiro has warned.
Mr Charles Peter Mayiga gave the warning at the launch of Project to Empower Women Through Savings and Loans (PEWOSA), the kingdom's savings and credit scheme at Bulange, Mengo, on Wednesday.
"I do not work with thieves. I will need to look at your books of accounts (PEWOSA) periodically. Should I find you diverting members' savings, I will twist your arm," Mr Mayiga said.
"I do not want to hear stories of any staff using members' savings to buy new cars, going for holiday in Dubai and, if it is a man, marrying other women."
Mr Mayiga thanked the kingdom radio, Central Broadcasting Services, for the initiative of the savings and credit scheme to address poverty among 13 million people in the kingdom.
"The Nabagereka always says if you want to go fast, walk alone, but if you want to go far walk with others. This is why we should work together as a group and save money to borrow within ourselves," he said.
The project manager PEWOSA, Ms Florence Luwedde, said more than 250 groups have been registered. "Lending is made to groups that have saved at least Shs1.5 million. So far we have more than Shs1 billion," Ms Luwedde said.
Mr Mayiga said he was optimistic that the new initiative will ensure Buganda gains its former glory in terms of prosperity. "We do not want our people to sleep in abject poverty. Let us embrace the saving culture and accumulate money," Mr Mayiga said.
