{UAH} Cop Killed as Gunmen Attack Luwero Police Post
Breaking:
==================================
Heavily-armed Counter terrorism operatives and experienced detectives have been dispatched from Kampala to Luwero District after unknown gunmen raided a police post before shooting dead a police officer.
The latest development will shock the nation which is struggling to come to terms with the brutal killing of State Prosecutor, Joan Kagezi in Kiwatule, Kampala.
Savannah Region Police Spokesperson, Lamech Kigozi, told us on Wednesday morning that at around 4:00 am today, "thugs attacked Kasana police post in Luwero district before killing a police officer on duty and injuring another."
He said the thugs escaped immediately after the shooting and that police are yet to hold suspects in the attack.
"At least three police officers were on guard that night when attackers asked them to hand them keys to the armoury," said Kigozi.
"Our officers refused, sparking off a physical fight during which one of our cops was shot dead."
In June last year, armed men attacked Mubende Police station but were repulsed before laying their hands on the armoury.
Kigozi today said, "Our officers were taken by surprise and the attackers also were armed."
He added: "They came in and started shooting and by the time they called in back up, the thugs had fled, but we shall get them."
Kigozi adds that "the officers were too brave and never gave up protecting the arms which the assailants had come to rob."
The incident also comes against the backdrop of the killing of three men by gunmen in Lungujja on Sunday night and a mobile money agent in Bunamwaya on Monday.
Unknown gunmen have in recent months targeted police stations before walking away with guns and rounds of ammunition.
Police suspect that rebel Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) could be the mastermind behind the spate of murders in the country.
In 2012, gunmen raided a police post Nakifuma before killing a cop in another onslaught on Kasese police station.
As part of the review of Police operations and processes, IGP Gen Kayihura in 2012 restructured the Crime Intelligence Division of CID and created a versatile Crime Intelligence Squad, known as Fling Squad to complement the work of the Crime Investigation Division, in tracking down violent criminals in the country.
Members of this squad are deployed to work in the Regions, and the Districts, down to the Station Level, under the command of the Regional and District Police Commanders, to provide the vital Intelligence component to crime investigations.
