Lisburn's outgoing Mayor, Councillor Andrew Ewing, recently weighed in behind a local college's efforts to develop a vocational training institute in Northern Uganda.

South Eastern Regional College has teamed up with the 'Fields of Life' charity to launch the 'Upskilling Uganda' project, which aims to change thousands of young lives in rural Africa.

SERC recently hosted a breakfast networking event to help raise awareness of the project, with Councillor Ewing among those attending.

It gathered local businesses, employers, college staff and other organisations to learn how they could work together to help make the project a success.

SERC Head of Development, Claire Henderson, who recently visited Uganda as part of the project, urged some 60 delegates to volunteer their skills and expertise in any way they could to raise as much money as possible for the project.

"Every child deserves the opportunity to learn," she said. "The impact that you make can never be underestimated.

"SERC's partnership with Fields of Life will enable us to give something back by enabling the young people of Uganda to undertake vocational training to help them make a brighter future for themselves by drawing on the wealth of experience of staff, students and businesses."

The college and Fields of Life hope to raise vital funds through a wide range of activities including student fundraising, events and donations.

Councillor Ewing said: "Upskilling Uganda demonstrates great commitment to supporting disadvantaged and vulnerable areas into work and full, independent lives. The charity continues to play a key role in the local community, working with employers to help more people build sustainable futures for the young people of Uganda.

"It is important that more local organisations partner with the project to help even more people fulfil their potential."
