In a letter to the police, Jacqueline Mbabazi, wife of former prime minister Amama, last week reported a plot by unknown people to kidnap and murder her children and grandchildren.
Addressed to the officer in charge of the criminal investigations at Jinja Road police station, the letter named the targeted children as Rachael Mbabazi, Nina Mbabazi Rukikaire, Andrew Mao Kamugasha Mbabazi, Allan Namanya, Khaddafina Mbabazi, and Marx Bagwowabo.
Jacqueline said her nine grandchildren (names withheld), who attend Cambridge international school, are also threatened with kidnap. According to Jacqueline, the national chairperson of the NRM Women's league, the family initially received the information about the attempt to murder and kidnap their children on June 16, 2015.
"At the time, I believed it to be an ordinary rumour. However, the information kept coming back through diverse sources to the consternation of my family," she wrote.
Jacqueline said that on June 25, 2015, the same information was relayed to her from a highly-placed source in security circles.
"The information was to the effect that the plan to kill one of my children, and kidnap or abduct my grandchildren as they returned from school was in advanced stages of being executed," Jacqueline wrote.
"Like any parent, I received this information with great concern and worry for the safety of my children/grandchildren. I'm incredibly saddened by this state of affairs that is a threat to the personal security of my family and by extension the wider family of Uganda," she said.
Jacqueline demands that police quickly investigate the matter. Contacted on Saturday, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Patrick Onyango acknowledged receipt of the complaint.
"We are taking the matter seriously and we have set up an inquiry into the matter but the problem is she is not giving us any leads on who she suspects to be issuing the murder and kidnap threats," Onyango said.
"We don't know if the children and the grandchildren stay at her [Jacqueline] place because if they do, then they have maximum security but if they don't, they need to tell us where exactly they are staying such that we give them more security."
The letter is copied to the Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura, Minister for Internal Affairs General Aronda Nyakairima, the director of the internal security organization and the Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda.
