Soroti.
A section of police officers in Soroti District have protested against what they called "conscription" into the NRM during the ongoing registration of the party inside their barracks and outlying police posts.

The aggrieved police officers, who feared to be identified, claimed they and their children aged 15 had been forced to register as NRM party members.

One officer, who showed Saturday Monitor his NRM membership card, said a wife of another policeman, had been deployed to register police officers and their families and that they had been warned that whoever refused to register would be punished.

"Some of us are suspicious of the move, but we can't reject because we still need to have food for our children," he said.

Mr Juma Hassan Nyene, the police spokesperson for East Kyoga region, denied knowledge of the forced registration, but said no one should be made to belong to a particular political party against their wish.

"It's not also a crime for police officer to identify himself with a party of his choice," Mr Nyene added.

Mr Charles Elasu, the Soroti District NRM chairperson, declined to comment on the issue on telephone.

However, when contacted for the second time, he switched off his phone, claiming he was travelling.

Mr Kenneth Omona, the NRM deputy treasurer, also declined to comment on the issue and switched off his phone.

In Katakwi District, residents also alleged they were being forced to register on grounds that the NRM membership cards would be a prerequisite for voting in the national elections.

However, Mr Walter Elakas, Katakwi District NRM general secretary, denied the allegations.
"We are in multiparty dispensation, so everyone can associate with any party he or she wants," he said
