Rabbai who dug his grave at 77, dies at 97
The mood was sombre yesterday as family members and friends gathered in Bweyogerere, Wakiso District, to celebrate the life of Rabbi Canon Ezekiel Mulondo who died on Tuesday.
Rabbi Mulondo, who surprised family members 20 years ago when he dug his own grave while still alive, died at his home.
Friends said he dug his grave after that of late Bishop Misaeri Kauma reportedly caved in days after his burial.
Rabbi Mulondo is remembered for building St Francis Basirika Church of Uganda, Kyaliwajala, in one of his family compounds. Rabbi, a Jewish title for teacher or preacher, was bestowed upon him by the Church.
Ms Darlin Mulondo, one of his daughters, said her father died of heart failure. "About a month back, he got a heart attack, recovered but his heart became weak," she said.
Ms Mulondo added tha although he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011, he had been undergoing treatment from time to time. "The cancer was being managed," she said.
Ms Jackie Basuuta, Mulondo's other daughter, said her father was very intelligent. "He gave us everything we desired in life, including taking us to study in the United States," she said.
Age. 97
Background. Rabbi Mulondo was born in Ekakute Ndejje Bulemezi to Eriya Tagwaako and Besimesi Bagabinga.
Education. He attended Namataba Primary School, Mengo Central School and Buddo Senior Secondary School.
Work experience. He served in the Uganda Police Force for 15 years before going to work as an immigration officer. He then joined the East Africa General Insurance (EAGEN) where he worked from 1971 to 1998. He served as the patron of Express Football Club.
Burial arrangements:
A funeral service will be held today at 10am at St Francis Basirika Church of Uganda, Kyaliwajala, followed by the burial at Namataba- Muttanzige on Jinja Road at 4pm.
