{UAH} UGANDA POISONED CHALISE (UPC)

Forum;

The leadership of UPC party is that of a poisoned chalice, because the party was built around a personality. The personality of Obote. Parties built around a personality do not stand the test of time and loses it's identity once that personality is down and out.
In his piece, Personality-based politics stifles multi-party democracy in Liberia;  Sesay wrote that;

Liberian politics, just like African politics, is remarkable for its lack of policy-driven parties. Instead, politics orbits around personalities – men like Yoweri Museveni, Raila Odinga, and Robert Mugabe – are at the core of the business of politics in their countries. Everything revolves around them.
Their political parties have no distinct identity; they are synonymous with the party leader. Centred on a personality, often times at his whims, these parties face political oblivion once the leader exits the political stage.

But forgot to mention Dr Obote and Ghandi who both played similar roles in their respective countries. In the case Uganda, Obote's cult was built by his single mindedness, people around him and his opponent, who made him personally liable for his policies. This cost the party dearly.

Democracy is a market place where ideas, policies and ideological belief compete and not personalities. Personalities and ethnic based politics stifle the growth of a party and democracy. These two elements must be removed from party politics for a party and democracy to thrive in a country. A single-minded agenda, rather than personality driven party like Uganda Federal Alliance (UFA), is better placed, as voters know for what it stands for. The UPC is far from that. As long as the old hands, the blood line and the old policies continue to be the mainstay, the leadership of the party will always remain a poisoned chalice.
