Worker 'planned hit job' on husband in prison break

Joyce "Tillie" Mitchell made the stunning admission during two 10-hour interrogations by State Police investigators, a law enforcement source told the Albany Times-Union.

But she changed her mind at the last minute and failed to show up with a getaway car when convicted killers Richard Matt and David Sweat climbed out of a manhole outside the maximum-security Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, officials said.

Clinton County District Attorney Andrew Wylie said Sunday that Mitchell's change of heart came when she realized she still loved her hubby, Lyle, and felt guilty about what she had done.

"Basically, when it was go time and it was the actual day of the event, I do think she got cold feet and realized, 'What am I doing?' " Wylie said. "Reality struck. She realized that, really, the grass wasn't greener on the other side."

Meanwhile, the hunt for the killers stretched into its ninth day, with authorities expanding a search area in nearby Cadyville.

Deputy US marshals and state troopers were also going door-to-door searching homes to ensure no residents were being held hostage, a law enforcement source said.

Sources have said Matt sweet-talked Joyce Mitchell, a tailor-shop supervisor, into helping him and Sweat bust out by leading her to believe "there was something more" between them.

A source with ties to the prison said Sunday that Lyle Mitchell, who is a maintenance worker there, broke down in tears when he showed up for work last week only to be told to go home because he and his wife were under investigation in the escape.

Joyce Mitchell is set to appear in court Monday.

Matt and Sweat crawled out of their cells through holes they made in the wall with power tools. Authorities have no evidence the men had a Plan B once Joyce Mitchell didn't show up, and believe they are still around Dannemora.

Meanwhile, Gov. Andrew Cuomo is set to announce a formal investigation into the escape, The New York Times reported.

He will direct the state inspector general to look into "all factors" involved.
